Chapter Twelve

The planning of their course of action happened relatively quickly. That being the case, Eli was not totally convinced that their best plan should involve him sitting alone in the apartment, waiting for Carl Yager to show up. Eli had thought it best to try to intercept Carl on his way into town. That way they would be able to use their wolf forms, if necessary, without the added worry of being seen by the human population. Kellan had quickly vetoed that option, citing that it would be much easier to conceal all the assisting members of the pack throughout the neighboring apartments and the surrounding shops, than it would be to coordinate everyone in a large open expanse. He liked the idea of having a small, defensible area. Kellan’s major concern was that Carl had lied to Eli and was not really alone. With an unknown number of enemy combatants en route, he felt it would be easier to protect Eli in the apartment building.

While Eli didn’t necessarily agree that it was the best course of action, he knew arguing with Kellan in front of the pack would make Kellan look weak. He resigned himself to following along with the current plan and fighting with Kellan about his overbearingness at a later date, when there was more time to do it right.

Because Shifters had such a strong sense of smell, no one would be able to be in the apartment with Eli without running the risk of discovery. Therefore, Eli was alone in the living room, pacing. He would never forgive himself if he failed to get his brother back alive. All he could hope for was that Carl wasn’t completely lost in his fantasy world and that he would still realize that the best way to get Eli to comply with his wishes would be to spare Noah’s life.

After another twenty minutes of pacing a rut into the apartment floor, Eli finally heard the chime of the elevator down the hall. He tensed, knowing it had to be Carl. Part of the plan had been to evacuate the apartment building of all humans and redirect anyone other than Carl who attempted to enter. With the humans gone, pack members had been placed in the now vacant apartments throughout the building. Even if Carl picked up on the strong scent of shifters in the building, he would most likely assume it was a shifter owned building and therefore justify it to himself without suspicion.

A strong, double knock sounded through the apartment. Eli schooled his features, desperate to hide his apprehension from Carl. He knew he had a role to play if he had any hope of getting his brother back alive. There was no guarantee that Carl had brought Noah with him. He might have changed his mind, deciding to grab Eli and take his chances that Noah would survive the trip to Mason without medical attention. Reaching for the knob, Eli took a breath to calm his ragged nerves.
